9/11 Heroes Run Honors the Fallen

What are you doing this September 11th?

Why not put your fitness to the test for good cause with some folks from Team TRX at the 2011 Travis Manion 9/11 Heroes Run (see video above)? This is a global event with races taking place in cities from San Francisco to New York, from Guam to Berlin. There is even a run taking place on a ship in the Persian Gulf.

This event means a bit more to us here at TRX than a chance to run fast in Crissy Field. The purpose of the race is to bring the community together and honor first responders and military service members who sacrifice each day to prevent attacks like the one that occurred on 9/11/2001 from happening again.

The Heroes Run was organized by the family of Travis Manion, a United States Marine who was killed by enemy sniper fire in Iraq on April 29, 2007 while trying to move one of his wounded Marines to safety. Before leaving on his second deployment, his father asked him why he was going back. In response, Travis handed his father an NYC Fire Department hat and told him the events of 9/11 were what inspired him to return. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star with Valor for his service.

After his death, checks began appearing at his family’s home from across the country. Soon they had received over $100,000 and dedicated themselves to donating every penny to worthy causes under the Travis Manion Foundation. Since then, the Foundation has given hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for aspiring leaders, fellowships for wounded and disabled veterans and Good Grief seminars to help the families of the fallen. The 9/11 Travis Manion Heroes Run is their biggest fund raising event.

Mike Taylor, TRX Head of Navy and Coast Guard Programs, was a friend and classmate of Travis’ in the Naval Academy. Mike has organized the San Francisco race on his own time as a way to pay tribute, or as the Travis Manion Foundation likes to say, “to honor the fallen by challenging the living.”
