Tips for Making the Most of your IHRSA Experience

IHRSA is arguably one of the world’s largest annual industry events with more than 10,000 pros from 80 countries, 400 exhibitors—including us at TRX!—and 100+ educational sessions. There’s plenty of opportunity to learn new tricks, find ways to streamline your systems and operations, meet other passionate pros, discover what some of health club industry’s top pros do to stay ahead of the pack, and so much more.

But an event of this magnitude can be a bit overwhelming so we’ve come up with our top tips to help you get everything you can out of this grandiose event.

Plan Ahead

It may seem like a no-brainer to go over sessions and all the extracurriculars before making the trip to sunny San Diego. However, thanks to a massive hall filled with the latest tech, killer workouts and snacks; over a hundred seminars to choose from; and running into your fave fitness friends, it can be easy to get distracted.

Did we mention snacks?

While we certainly don’t want to force you into a rigid schedule because sometimes the best opportunities happen on the fly, we do recommend sticking to some sort of plan so that you don’t miss out on the things that inspired you to attend the event in the first place.

A handy way to keep track of your sessions, networking events, meetings, exhibitors you want to visit, and everything else IHRSA is to download the IHRSA 2019 app. Scroll through the app to take a look at session descriptions, find out what events are happening each day, see what other attendees are talking about, share your experiences, and more.

Note that the app is only available for iOS devices so those without an Apple product will need to find another way to keep track of all the necessary deets.

Pick a Smart Program and Do it Early

Speaking of planning ahead; it’s a good idea to lock in your sessions as far in advance as possible. Seats are limited, so you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss out on the topics that matter to you most.

Selecting your program well before the event also gives you a chance to make sure you’ve got enough balance in your schedule. You may love learning about leadership, but if that’s already in your wheelhouse, how about checking out sessions on subjects you’re less familiar with or, gasp, give you the shivers?

When planning your schedule, think about the struggles you face in your business and see if there are sessions that address them. Are you a social media noob? Have you noticed a slow decline in new member sign-ups? Do you find difficulty recruiting and keeping top talent? It might be time to challenge yourself to grow in areas where you’re less skilled.

Keep in mind that selecting your session ahead of time doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it should you want to bail last-minute. Just know that you’ll likely have to go stand-by on any class you’re not signed up for.

Dominate the Hall

IHRSA’s expo hall is massive and can feel overwhelming as more than 400 exhibitors set up shop in hopes of grabbing your attention. You could easily spend a full day slowly wandering from booth to booth checking out the endless array of goodies.

If that’s your jam, have at it.

Also, pad your schedule with extra hall time; there’s so much to see and experience, and lots of friends to chat with that you’ll inevitably get carried away and stay longer than you intended.

Stay Fed and Hydrated

Having attended IHRSA—and countless other conferences—for many years, we know full-well how easy it is to neglect the basics like food and fluids. Time tends to warp at events like these and before you know it, it’s 5pm and your stomach is giving you a fierce reminder that you skipped breakfast and lunch.

Carve breaks into your day for real meals (we love protein bars, but they don’t count) so that you don’t end up with a serious case of hanger and belly rumbles during the last session of the evening.

The good news is that downtown San Diego is loaded with all kinds of restaurants within walking distance of the conference. In a pinch, there are eateries inside the convention center, but you may have to deal with long lines filled with other hungry attendees. The hall will have plenty of snacks, but that’ll only take you so far.

You’ll also want to load your backpack with fruit, nuts, trail mix, your favorite protein bars and a water bottle to keep you going in between meals.

Conference Must-Haves

Aside from keeping well-stocked on nutritious goodies, there are other things you should make sure to have on-hand as you wander the conference. Here’s a short list of what to bring:

* Cell phone charger cable because batteries drain quick when you’re fighting 10,000 attendees for service. Bonus points for a portable charger because there are only so many outlets available.

* Change of clothes, should you plan to get your sweat on in any of the movement sessions or expo hall demo workouts.

* Layer up. Session rooms can get mighty chilly.

* Laptop, tablet, paper, pen/pencil—whatever your preferred note-taking tool, bring it. So much information will be shared that it’s virtually impossible to rely on your brain to store it all.

* Business cards or other way to share contact info. There are plenty of connections to be made at IHRSA so make sure you’ve got an easy way to let others know how to reach you.

* Your trusty foam roller or other SMR tool. Hotel dwelling, extra daily steps, workouts and too much sitting can take a toll on your body. Keep that body feeling fresh, mobile, and happy with regular roll-out sessions.

* And, of course, don’t forget to pack your TRX Pro4 System so that you can get in a quick pre-session, lunchtime, or pre-dinner party workout in your hotel room.
