As the majority of you roll out of bed this morning and stumble to the coffee maker, TRX Community member John Hamnett is starting his ascent up Mount Snowdon in Wales on the first leg of the Three Peaks Challenge, where the goal is to climb the three highest peaks in the UK within 24 hours.
The satisfaction felt at summit will be two-fold for Hamnett, who recently lost over 70 pounds, thanks in part to thrice weekly TRX sessions at Outklass Fitness in Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom.
A year ago, Hamnett was battling back pain due to an injury, his weight stood at 270 pounds and was steadily increasing. He was under constant stress from a busy work schedule and found it difficult to “switch off” at the end of the day.
On his first visit to Outklass Fitness in July 2009, the staff developed a fitness and nutrition program specifically for Hamnett’s needs and goals and kept varying the fitness component of it as Hamnett progressed to increase the challenge. The TRX factored heavily in his sessions, as did other modalities like kettlebells.
“Instead of something I should do, I started to look forward to my training sessions and derived a great sense of achievement from them. They were fun, personal, and most importantly, I could see and feel how my body was changing for the better,” says Hamnett.
The results speak for themselves. Just 12 months after he was first introduced to the TRX, Hamnett now weighs 196 pounds and finally has relief from his recurring back pain. And mentally, Hamnett’s stress levels are down dramatically thanks to his commitment to improved health and fitness.
Although Hamnett still has a way to go in achieving his goals, he feels stronger, fitter and in the best shape of his life. “Exercising, especially with the TRX, is now a very enjoyable part of my life,” says Hamnett. “I cannot imagine my life without it.”
