Today I’m a Yoga Instructor, Under Armour trainer and public health PhD. It was a long road to get here - finding my “best self” through fitness.
I started taking fitness classes in high school, but for all of the wrong reasons. Like many girls at that delicate, age, my main goal was to be skinny, not healthy.
It wasn’t long before I had developed an unhealthy addiction to fitness that I took to the extreme. After a few years, I finally realized that I needed to refocus my motivations for working out. I needed to find my new “why.” Slowly, I started to shift my focus from what my body looked like, to what my body could DO.
As an adult, fitness is a huge part of my life, and now I approach it the right way. I’m constantly finding and testing new limits, and working diligently to improve and correct inadequacies in my training. Then I repeat the process all over again. Everyday is an opportunity to learn something new, try something different and work to get better. I live in a continual cycle of failure, learning, improvement and growth.
Isn’t that what life is all about?
#MyPersonalGold is to improve every day. It may sound simple, but I promise you, it’s tough in practice. I can’t just sit around and wait for a challenge to come to me. I have to seek them out daily and then I have to show up and put in the work. In a sense, #MyPersonalGold is not quite attainable. It’s a forward moving target, but “BETTER” is always within reach.
TRX helps me strive for better. Every time I get on the straps, it challenges me physically. The best part is that the possibilities are endless—there’s always a progression, a unique means of challenging myself or a new movement to learn—and it’s NEVER easy. I also love practicing my favorite Yoga poses, like backbends, using the TRX straps as a prop for support.
I no longer measure my success by the numbers on the scale. I haven’t stepped on one in more than two decades, and I don’t plan on ever stepping on one again. I don’t diet and I never count calories, but I do make a conscious effort to make mostly-healthy choices to fuel my body. I measure growth in strength, endurance, flexibility and mobility - focusing on how good I feel, not how good I look in the mirror.
I’m continuously working on my personal fitness journey. I’ve developed a passion for teaching and helping others gain a healthy love for working out. By sharing my own experiences and past struggles, my pains and my progress, I’m hoping to inspire others to pursue their own personal gold…. and find their better.
