Surfing is one of the most physically demanding sports out there, so it’s really important if you surf, or want to surf, you are in top physical shape. The sport has evolved so much in the last 10 to 20 years, and the level of surfing has skyrocketed. As a professional surfer, it is important to stay in optimal shape to maximize your time and performance in the water.
Professional surfer Holly Beck has never been one to hit the gym, much less have a workout routine, preferring to stay fit with surfing, skateboarding, yoga and hiking. But when she first learned about the TRX two years ago, she was intrigued. “A training tool I can use anywhere – even the great outdoors?” she thought when first introduced to the TRX. “I gotta give it a try.” Once she did, she quickly realized how effective and efficient the TRX is. “I was worked after my first 30 minute workout with it!”
Another huge selling feature for Holly is the portability of the TRX. Because of her hectic travel schedule (in the past year alone, she has traveled to California, Baja Mexico, Fiji, Taiwan, Haiti, Panama and Nicaragua), Holly needs a workout that goes with her. “The TRX is the perfect travel companion. It’s a great workout if the surf isn’t happening, or it’s awesome for a post surf stretch.”
Holly is such a proponent of the TRX that last summer she teamed up with surf fitness guru, Scott Adams, CSCS, to create the Surf Stronger TRX Workout, a time efficient, super effective workout to help all athletes (not just surfers!) improve their athletic performance and strength. Bonus for surf buffs: the video also features awe-inspiring surf footage and a killer soundtrack.
Holly continues to use the Surf Stronger TRX Workout to stay surf-ready year round. “I can jam out the Surf Stronger Workout in about 30 minutes. My favorite part of the workout is definitely the stretching segment at the end. I sometimes surf three, four, even five hours straight, and there is nothing quite like a good stretch at the end of a long day of surfing.”
Her favorite exercises include the TRX Lower Back Stretch with Rotation (shown below), TRX Figure-four Stretch and TRX Child’s Pose, all great for increasing total body flexibility. The workout also features a challenging series of surf-specific movements that includes the surfer’s pop-up drill, TRX Lunge and TRX Power Pull. Says Holly, “If I haven’t been in the water for a while, these exercises really provide a great surf fitness tune-up.”
If you’re a surfer who can’t get in the water every day and you need a little cross training, check out the Surf Stronger TRX Workout. Or if you are thinking about trying surfing for the first time, train up with this workout before you paddle out. It will make a huge difference. “In my estimation,” says Holly, “using the TRX is the most direct, efficient way to cross train for surfing.”
California native and professional surfer Holly Beck (www.hollybecksurfs.blogspot.com) epitomizes the healthy surfing lifestyle. A former NSSA National Champion, Holly spent seven years traveling the world to compete against some of the best women surfers in the world, before hanging up the jersey to spend more time focusing on adventure travel. Favorite surfing experiences for the goofy footer include pulling in to heaving barrels (makeable or not) and enjoying the solitude and peace the ocean offers.
