TRX On Tour at the Mavericks Invitational

Barreling down a 40-foot wall of liquid concrete, burying the rail of a seven-foot board and cranking out a hair-pin bottom turn requires the perfect mix of skill, fitness and guts—and over the past few years, TRX Training has been a staple in the training regimens of some of the top surfing pros. That’s why TRX CEO and avid surfer Randy Hetrick, along with TRX Training and Development Manager Dan McDonogh, recently drove the TRX On Tour van down to the Mavericks Invitational Big Wave Surf Contest to share the benefits of TRX for surfing.

We asked Scott Adams, head coach at Surf Stronger, the leading force in surf-specific strength and conditioning programs, how the pros get ready for events like Mavericks. He said that contemporary professional surfing requires a different kind of athlete than it did in the past. Adams suggested that nearly all of the pros now incorporate some kind of auxiliary strength and conditioning work to improve their performance in the water. His own programs rely heavily on TRX.

“The TRX is perfect for surfing because it’s such a bodyweight-based dynamic movement sport,” Adams said. “Practically every exercise is going to involve something that will benefit you, with either a core demand or an aligning of the body.”

One of Adams’ favorite TRX exercises is the TRX Power Pull, which he has modified to incorporate a squat at the bottom. “With surfing, there is so much compression and decompression of the legs. This exercise maps directly to the way you generate speed or land maneuvers while you’re surfing, by compressing the body and then decompressing up the face of the wave,” he said. This movement engages the transverse plane with rotational resistance, which is similar to the way the body loads while performing a powerful bottom turn. The incorporation of the lats and shoulders at the top of the Power Pull translates well to paddling and popping up.
