In preparation for his upcoming bout against Damarques Johnson at “UFC on FOX Velasquez VS. Dos Santos," in Anaheim, Ca., on Nov. 12, Clay “Heavy Metal” Harvison stopped by TRX HQ last week to get some hands training with Director of Rip Training, Pete Holman, and TRX Head of Human Performance, Chris Frankel, and gave us some of his impressions on TRX Training.
“It incorporates everything we use as fighters. It gets you more mobile, agile and strong for whatever you are trying to do,” Harvison said, “it builds power in your hips and strength in your core; it’s everything we need.”
Holman took Harvison through an intense TRX hybrid workout, which started with mobility and core work on the TRX Suspension Trainer, then moved into explosive striking work with the TRX Rip Trainer. A powerhouse that left him calling Holman “The Mad Scientist” by the time they were done.
A big proponent of hot yoga for working on his flexibility, he says that he can see the movements Frankel showed him on the TRX Suspension Trainer as the perfect way to bridge the gap between flexibility, mobility and strength building. He thinks it will be particularly beneficial for working through his recurring psoas issues. Typically, he uses yoga for this but he feels like it can only take him so far. “With yoga, I’m just able to stretch it out, but with the TRX or the Rip Trainer I can actually build strength while I’m working on my flexibility.”
Harvison was first introduced to the TRX Suspension Trainer while training in Atlanta, Ga. “I was like, ‘What is this?!’ Then we started playing around with it and I realized, wow there is a ton of stuff you can do with this.” Even though his initial exposure to the TRX was unsupervised and experimental, as soon as he got out of his session with Holman he felt like he got a totally different experience. “Having someone take you through it , makes all the difference, it makes what I was doing before feel like I was grappling without a partner.”
Like many professional MMA fighters, Harvison’s training schedule is dense, typically training at least two disciplines a day, six days a week. For this kind of regimen, he needs to incorporate strength training that won’t overload his joints or take too much time to recover from. This is one of the reasons the Suspension Trainer and Rip Trainer are a perfect fit for this Harvison’s training goals. Using his own bodyweight or body position to create resistance means that he can scale any exercise to get exactly what he needs, and none of what he doesn’t.
“Going forward,” he said “I can see myself using it to get more explosive, and strong and really release whatever kind of output I’m trying get at the time”
