A PoweredBy TRX Partner brings suspension training to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the results show up in performance, retention, and revenue.

For most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies, the question isn't whether athletes need supplemental strength work; it's how to deliver it without pulling members off the mats or diluting the identity of the academy. Hamptons Jiu Jitsu, owned by Greg Melita, found its answer in TRX, and the results have reshaped both its training floor and its business model.

The Problem: A Missing Piece in Athletic Development

Before bringing TRX into the gym, Hamptons Jiu Jitsu had no dedicated functional fitness offering. BJJ athletes were getting world-class technical instruction, but the supplemental work that builds core stability, injury resilience, and functional strength simply wasn't part of the program.

"We needed a smarter way to offer a supplemental functional strength option, core stability, and injury resilience in our BJJ members," Melita explains.

Why TRX

The decision came down to fit. TRX's reputation as the standard in suspension training, combined with its scalability across ages and skill levels, made it a natural match for a grappling-focused academy. Just as important: it solved a practical space problem.

"Unlike traditional gym equipment, it integrates seamlessly into our Jiu-Jitsu academy and doesn't take up valuable mat space," Melita said. The brand's training and education resources also gave coaches the confidence to start delivering quality programming immediately, rather than spending months developing it from scratch.

One unexpected discovery: running TRX sessions barefoot, directly on the BJJ mats, made the floor-based exercises even more effective, turning what could have been a bolt-on fitness class into something that felt native to the academy's training environment.

What Changed

The shift has been visible in how members train and how they feel about training. According to the team, members are seeing measurable improvements in strength and mobility, and the sessions themselves have injected new energy into the gym. "The sessions feel fresh and athletic, which has boosted energy and engagement on the mats," Melita said.

Coaches have changed too. TRX's education resources sharpened the team's ability to cue tension, alignment, and movement quality, giving newer instructors a structured framework and raising the consistency of coaching across the board.

Scaling Across Skill Levels

One of TRX's biggest advantages for a mixed-level academy is how easily it adjusts. By changing foot position, body angle, or leverage, coaches can run a single class that serves beginners and advanced athletes simultaneously.

"We use it for beginners with more stable setups and higher assistance, while advanced athletes get challenging variations like single-arm rows, atomic push-ups, and rotational core work that directly carries over to guard passing and takedown defense," Melita explains.

Member Feedback and a Standout Story

The feedback loop from members has been consistently positive; athletes report feeling stronger and more explosive on the mats, alongside the kind of soreness that signals real progress in the core, back, and shoulders. One comment from a certification and coaches course captured it well: "I didn't realize how weak my core was until TRX showed me."

One story stands out in particular: a BJJ coach at the academy went on to become a TRX-certified pro coach through the program. The training measurably improved his back flexibility and bodyweight strength, and he now incorporates TRX directly into his own private lessons and client sessions, turning a personal transformation into a tool he passes on to others.

Measurable Business Impact

The performance gains translated into business results. During the academy's summer program, adding TRX classes alongside standard BJJ programming drove a significant revenue increase. Members who train with TRX regularly also show up more consistently and often continue using it at home, reinforcing engagement beyond the gym's walls.

TRX has also opened new revenue paths: added value within existing memberships, premium small-group conditioning add-ons, and support for advanced kids' programs, all of which reinforce the academy's positioning as a complete performance facility.

That positioning has had a direct effect on pricing power. "Parents and serious adult students see the investment in quality equipment and education as a sign we're committed to results, which makes them more comfortable with our membership rates and add-on packages," Melita said.

The Value of Being a PoweredBy TRX Partner

Being part of the program adds credibility when promoting the offering locally and on social media, reinforcing the "Why Families & Serious Students Choose Hamptons Jiu Jitsu" message at the core of the academy's brand.

As a PoweredBy TRX facility, Hamptons Jiu-Jitsu will now offer group fitness classes to its newest location in Westhampton, giving local residents access to TRX training and providing the academy another touchpoint for growth in its newest location.

It's a rare combination: a tool that makes athletes better at their sport and makes the business stronger at the same time.
